PRofessional Development Session
ePortfolios
Implementing A Learning Framework for Student Reflection and Assessment
Learner Demographics and Attendance Requirement
Learners for this professional development will be Chemeketa Community College faculty. Learners’ instructional experience ranges from those who teach Career and Technical programs and those in General Education and Transfer. Attendance for professional development sessions is purely voluntary.
Length of Presentation
This session will be 60 minutes and will provide an overview of ePortfolio concepts. Group discussion and individual reflection will allow participants the opportunity to consider how ePortfolios might be implemented at a course or program level. This session has been conducted previously (one time) with sufficient time for presentation, group discussion and individual reflection.
Equipment Required
The session will be in-person, and will take place in a faculty development computer lab with large-screen projection TV for the presentation. Participants will have access to computers for the small-group work sessions, and will not be required to bring any additional items. Participants who bring their own laptop or mobile device can access the college wifi network.
Existing and Future Relationship with Participants
Due to the size of the college, the workshop facilitator might not have an existing relationship with all participants. Following the session the workshop facilitator can develop an on-going relationship with participants through follow-up sessions, working with instructors and their students in the classroom.
Expected Outcome of Professional Development
The goal of the session is that instructors will gain knowledge about ePortfolios, the benefits to learning, and support options for implementation into their course(s). There are no additional requirements or timelines for instructors to implement ePortfolios, beyond the professional development session.
How will you differentiate your instruction with the participants?
Because this session will be an examination of ePortfolios concepts as a learning framework (and not as technology) the need to different instruction with participants will be lessened. Learners will also participate in small-group discussions, and will have the opportunity to help each other with understanding. There will also be formative assessments throughout the training to gauge learner comprehension and understanding.
Training Session Follow-Up
If participants chose to implement ePortfolios in a specific course, two follow-up sessions will take place with that instructor, in their classroom. The classroom sessions with students will include an introductions of ePortfolios, followed by hands-on experience with Google Blogger.
What support will need to be in place and who will provide that support?
No support will be needed for the initial session. Support needed for follow-up, classroom sessions with students will include: a computer lab and projection system, handouts for students about accessing college-provided Google applications and overview of Blogger. Support for the classroom sessions will be provided by members of the Tech Hub faculty development team.
Site Administration
Because this is a community college setting, there is no site administration and no restrictions on the type of trainings offered.
Measuring Training Success
A summative evaluation will be provided at the end of the training. Additional ways to measure success will be tracking the number of participants who implement ePortfolios into their course(s), and through pre and post surveys of students to determine benefits to learning.
